FAU Student Meltdown: Can teaching evolution cause mental illness?
A recent article and video appeared on the Huffington Post website entitled “Jonatha Carr, Florida Atlantic University Student, Has Violent Outburst In Class Discussing Evolution.”
The video showed a female student ranting and roaming around the classroom in an increasingly belligerent fashion. After pushing and throwing a couple of punches, she was eventually pushed out of the classroom into the waiting arms of the police who, according to WSVN news, tasered Ms. Carr before throwing her into the back seat of a waiting patrol car.
While it may take some time for the authorities to figure out what was really causing this student’s violent outburst, somehow a discussion on the mating habits of peacocks in a class on evolution became the catalyst for this tirade.
Evidently, what could be understood amidst the emotional eruption was her angst about evolutionary teaching having a detrimental effect on black people. She was, according to witnesses, insisting that the professor, Dr. Stephen Kajiura, explain why evolution kills black people? His inability to give her a satisfactory reply resulted in her threat to kill him and her fellow students.
With all of the violence that has found its way into our classrooms, these types of threats must be taken very seriously. I realize that Ms. Carr’s response to the curriculum was incredibly inappropriate. I also recognize that what she was trying to communicate will be lost due to her emotionally unstable actions. While it may be easier just to write her off as a crazy person, this student’s anger about the adverse effects of evolutionary dogma on race relations is not without substance.
And this brings me to the reason for this email blast. One of the comments on the Huffington Post webpage that ran this story is from someone whose tag is JusticeIsWhere. This person wrote:
“Look up evolution, eugenics, abortion, planned-parenthood, racism and see what the anti-women’s rights people are saying to attack with misinformation at (the following link is from our own website at CSI) http://www.creationstudies.org/Education/darwins_racists_part2.html as well as others who exploit and promote these ideas to obtain their agenda. I do not think this woman was getting all her information from the college she blew up at. It is possible she was trying to balance conflicting information from faith, school, culture, and media and became infected with the insanity that is the American culture of half truths and power plays. When you’re young it is frustrating not knowing who or what to believe and trust.”
The URL above takes you to CSI’s offer of a documentary by Maafa 21 entitled: Black Genocide in 21st Century America. It is an eye-opening expose concerning the link between the hidden racial agenda and the policies inspired by Darwin’s disciples, e.g. those who championed evolutionary theory and the eugenics movement it inspired. Is there a link between people acting like animals and telling them that they are nothing more than pond scum, slime plus time? Did we trade the Bible and prayer for metal detectors in our public schools? How ironic was it that one of the Columbine murderers was wearing a tee-shirt with “Natural Selection” emblazoned on the front of it?
I would say that the outburst of this student was completely inappropriate. There is no excuse for violence and death threats. Perhaps she is suffering from some form of mental illness, but I would be cautious about excusing such behavior and writing her off as crazy. Take the time to watch Maafa 21’s documentary and then you will begin to understand the reason for Ms. Carr’s temporarily insane behavior. We are now offering this must see DVD for only $12.99.
