How can you believe the Bible, it’s full of contractions!
Well, if you haven’t heard that one before, simply Google “Bible contradictions” and you will be treated to 3,320,000 results. Admittedly, some of them come under the category of “Bible Contradictions answered,” but many of these results are chock-full of alleged evidence that the Bible is full of errors that make it unreliable.
Recently a brother in the Lord who attends my Bible study class brought an acquaintance with him. The visitor began asking questions that had a familiar ring to them. He challenged the veracity of the Hebrew Scriptures with regard to Noah’s flood. He mentioned that there were many flood “myths” in other cultures besides the Israelites. While it is quite true that there are stories of regional floods, the existence of a similar story does not invalidate the biblical record. Neither does a counterfeit falsify the legitimate article. In fact, the imitation is often evidence for the existence of the genuine, i.e. pyrite (fool’s gold) or cubic zirconium, etc.
Without going into a detailed explanation of why there are many versions of Noah’s flood in cultures the world over, there are several reasonable explanations for the existence of multiple flood scenarios. One biblically based explanation is that the worldwide cataclysmic flood record in chapters 6-9 of the book of Genesis would have been burned into the psyche of the descendants of Noah. By the time the world was repopulated by the descendants of Noah, and later scattered via the confusion of the languages (see Genesis chapter 10 and the story of the Tower of Babel), the story of the flood would have been taken by each newly formed tribe as part of their own personal historical record. Hence, what appears to be a series of unrelated local or regional flood stories generated by unconnected groups of people is really the collective memory (albeit not entirely accurate and personalized by later generations) of a devastatingly epic catastrophe.
After the Bible study ended, I continued to field questions from our skeptical visitor. It dawned on me that his mind had been polluted by these websites. After all, the Messiah warned His disciples by telling them:
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Matt. 6: 22-23
By filling himself up with the darkness of unbelievers and skeptics, mockers of the Word of God, he had become infected with darkness. The Word of God was now considered by him to be fatally flawed and devoid of real truth. He had become convinced that the lies of the skeptics were true; therefore, when the truth was shared with him he could not receive it. I pray that he is not one of those poor folk that the Bible describes as: Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, II Tim. 3:7.
If you want to be prepared to answer those skeptics who like to claim the Bible is full of contradictions, we have a perfect resource for you. Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions Vol. 1 is the best resource for taking the skeptics to task and arming yourself and your loved ones for the future battles that await them.
