The Devil’s Greatest Trick

The Devil’s Greatest Trick

For those who are fans of the cult classic “The Usual Suspects,” you will no doubt remember the quote concerning the evil one by the sinister criminal Keyser Söze. A part played with aplomb by Kevin Spacey who masquerades throughout the movie as a mob underling suffering from cerebral palsy named Roger “Verbal” Kint. It is Kint who tells an investigating officer, “The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.”

For those who are interested in such things, the screenwriter of this film lifted that quote from French poet, Charles Pierre Baudelaire, who also produced notable work as an essayist, art critic, and pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe. And this brings me to the point of this article.

Recently, the local chapter of The Satanic Temple has filed paperwork to start holding after school meetings at Vista Elementary in Taylorsville, Utah. Members of the organization claim they want the same rights as other groups. It appears that the Vista Elementary school officials are planning to comply.

Well, this certainly runs counter to the what has come to be known as the Devil’s greatest trick. The person who is pressing this issue did not give her real name, but offered a pseudonym Blythe Chalice. Why am I not surprised?  She insisted, “Our clubs are going to function the exact same way that The Good News Clubs function,” Blythe said. What this cowardly representative did not say is that they worship Beelzebub, the Lord of the flies (literally god of the dung hill), whom Jesus called the father of lies, John 8:44.

We have seen this exact type of opposition to Bible clubs, Creation clubs and other student led after school groups in the past. But there was always a stipulation that these after school clubs had to be student led. I am wondering what elementary school-age child is being promoted as the leader of these children? Maybe that student-led provision no longer exists. Some schools, so offended by Bible or Creation clubs, took the extreme action of closing their doors to all clubs. They are allowed to do that, but they must bar all student groups or allow all of them. It looks like this school is going to let these fledgling Satan worshipers set up a recruitment club for elementary school children. I wonder if they will allow kindergarten children (5 to 6 year-olds) to attend?

I still believe the father of lies is doing whatever he can to deceive. He is always more dangerous when he is hiding behind the scenes, invisible to the people who so easily fall under his influence. The other extreme works well for an entirely different reason. It becomes a source of ridicule, an amusing distraction, a parody of the truth.

British novelist, poet, academic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist, C. S. Lewis, wrote the following observation about how people view devils.

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

At Creation Studies Institute (CSI), we are not ignorant of the ways the enemy of our souls spreads his fear-based lies. He is equally pleased when Satanists try to make a mockery of the truth of the gospel by demanding equal time where the minds of our children are concerned. That is an overt attack against God’s children. But he also hides in plain sight when he uses another big lie, the lie of evolution, as the explanation that rejects, “In the beginning God created…” Gen. 1:1. He will continue to use every trick in his demonic bag to thwart God and the gospel of our Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The good news is that he is a defeated foe. Satan received a mortal wound to his head when the Messiah rose from the dead, Gen. 3:15. Like any wounded predator, Satan is still very dangerous. God’s children need to understand that he cannot do anything against believers   without first receiving permission, Job 1:9-11, 2:4-6. Because our heavenly Father is sovereign in all things, Lam. 3:37-38; Is. 45:7; Ecc. 7:13-14, we can trust His promise that He will work all things out for His glory and our ultimate benefit, Rom. 8:28.  The only other thing that Satan can do is lie to us. He is an expert in sending fear-based lies hurling like so many fiery darts towards the children of God. All of his lies are blocked by the shield of faith, Eph.6:16.

So whether it is his old trick of concealment or a more upfront and direct approach by promoting Satanism to our children, he is doomed. CSI is asking all of our partners to continue to support us financially and prayerfully by standing with us in the full amour of God, strong in the Lord and in His mighty power, Eph. 6:10.
