A New Mexico Court of Appeals has sided with a homosexual couple that sued a Christian photographer on the grounds that the business had violated the state’s discrimination law. They did so even though the photographer, Elane Hugenin, respectfully declined to accept the job. This business owner explained to Willock that, because of their Christian beliefs, the studio only handled “traditional weddings.” The Christian owned business even offered referrals to the lesbian couple. However, their response to Elane Photography’s choice not to take the job and thereby give tacit approval by documenting this same sex marriage was answered with a lawsuit.
New Mexico Court Decides Against Religious Freedom
For those of the Christian community who think that same sex marriage is unimportant or a side issue, think again. The attack on the biblically-based definition of marriage by radical homosexual groups is very serious. The push to include sexual orientation into the traditionally protected civil rights categories such as gender or race is an insult to groups that have been persecuted for reasons that do not include same sex attraction. Even if you buy into Lady Gaga’s mantra of “born this way,” sexual preference does not even come close to being equated with traditional categories of gender and ethnicity. Because most of the American people do not want anyone to be discriminated against for any reason, a plethora of groups have claimed special status with regard to sexual orientation. Most of society has given tacit approval to these groups rather than being labeled as bigots, haters or worse.
The sad truth is that our constitutional freedoms have been eroded by those who care little for our individual rights or the God from which they are lawfully derived. We see this same issue being brought before the Supreme Court with regard to the individual mandate that forces people to purchase health insurance or suffer the wrath of the Federal government. Make no mistake about this. Whatever way the Supreme Court decides with regard to Obamacare, it will have far-reaching consequences concerning our constitutionally protected freedoms.
The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) is planning to appeal this decision. All people who honor the biblical model of the marital covenant, a God-ordained contract between one man, one woman, and their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, should make this a matter of fervent prayer. We believe that our constitutionally protected religious freedoms cannot be trumped by state legislation that is driven and promoted by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.
While many groups are claiming genetic predisposition to one behavior or another, the Bible tells us that we are born in sin and we are by nature the children of disobedience. The Apostle Paul, a man whose worldly credentials were impeccable, Phil. 3:3-6, characterized himself as the chief of sinners, I Tim. 1:15. Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, a body of believers that consisted of mostly Gentiles who were saved from a background of paganism, said concerning them:
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), Eph. 2:1-5.
This is one of the major reasons that the Creation Studies Institute (CSI) exists. We believe that God has raised our organization up to stand for Christ’s righteousness in these increasingly dark times. It may not be politically correct, but is it right in the sight of the Lord. When all is said and done, we are told to stand in the complete armor of God, Eph. 6:13. We stand in the righteousness of God that comes by faith and not some position inspired by secular humanism masquerading in the garb of fairness. God gives us His righteousness, transforming us from sinners into saints, when we trusted in His Son, the Messiah, II Cor. 5:17-21.
We love the LGBT community, but we hate the sinful, self-centered lifestyle they have embraced. It is not God’s best for them and we will continue to point them to the Savior. Jesus loved them enough to die for their sins, so they could be reconciled to their heavenly Father. That is truly good news:
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation (payment in full that satisfies God’s wrath against sin) by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus, Rom. 3:21-26.
